About This Trail

Uptrack (Warming Shelter – Runs 4, 5, 6) is an uphill access route connecting the Hankin warming shelter area with the ski terrain serving Runs 4, 5, and 6. It allows backcountry skiers to climb toward these runs before beginning their descent. The route is part of the lift-free, ungroomed Hankin Backcountry Ski Area, which features cut trails through forested terrain. Runs 4, 5, and 6 are generally classified as intermediate, making this section suitable for skiers with some backcountry experience.

Getting There

Directions

From Smithers, travel north on Highway 16 and turn left onto Kitseguecla Loop Road. Cross the railway tracks and continue along Kitseguecla Lake Road. After approximately 8 km, turn left onto the 608 (Uptrack) Forest Service Road. Follow the road to the designated Hankin parking lot. From there, follow the marked uphill routes and official trail map toward the warming shelter and Runs 4, 5, and 6.

Parking

Parking is available at the designated Hankin parking lot. Winter road conditions can be snowy and icy, so a four-wheel-drive vehicle with winter tires and chains is recommended. The upper section of Uptrack FSR is narrow and single-lane, with descending traffic having the right of way. Trailers are not permitted.

Safety & Preparation

  • This is an ungroomed backcountry route with no lift access or regular patrol.
  • Check the avalanche forecast and current snow conditions before starting your ascent.
  • Carry an avalanche transceiver, probe, and shovel, and know how to use them.
  • Runs 4, 5, and 6 are generally considered intermediate terrain; assess conditions and your ability before skiing.
  • Watch for tree wells, hidden branches, rocks, and other natural obstacles.
  • Travel with a partner and maintain safe spacing in avalanche terrain.
  • Bring appropriate winter clothing, food, water, and navigation equipment.
  • The warming shelter is for daytime use only, not overnight accommodation.
