Getting There

Directions

From Smithers, travel north on Highway 16 for approximately 24 km and turn left onto Kitseguecla Loop Road. Cross the railway tracks and continue along Kitseguecla Lake Road for approximately 8 km. Turn left onto the 608 Forest Service Road (Uptrack Road) and follow the Hankin-Evelyn signs for approximately 9 km to the designated parking lot. From the parking area, follow the marked uphill skin tracks toward Runs 7 and 8. Use a GPS-enabled map or the official Hankin trail map to confirm the correct route.

Parking

Parking is available at the designated Hankin winter parking lot, which provides access to the uphill tracks and surrounding ski runs.

  • The access road is maintained during winter, but snow and ice can make driving challenging.
  • Four-wheel-drive vehicles equipped with winter tires and chains are recommended.
  • The upper section of Uptrack Forest Service Road is narrow and one-lane.
  • Descending traffic has the right of way.
  • Trailers are not permitted on the upper access road.
  • Park only in designated spaces and keep the road clear for other vehicles.

Safety & Preparation

  • Beginner terrain access: Runs 7 and 8 are identified as beginner-friendly downhill runs, but the uphill route still requires appropriate backcountry equipment and fitness.
  • Avalanche awareness: Check the current Avalanche Canada forecast before entering the backcountry.
  • Safety equipment: Carry an avalanche transceiver, probe, and shovel when travelling in avalanche terrain, and know how to use them.
  • Uphill etiquette: Stay on the designated uptrack and watch for downhill skiers approaching from above.
  • Tree hazards: Be aware of tree wells, hidden branches, stumps, and obstacles beneath the snow.
  • Changing conditions: Prepare for deep snow, icy sections, cold temperatures, and reduced visibility.
  • Travel with a partner: Avoid travelling alone and establish an emergency communication plan.
  • Proper equipment: Bring suitable touring skis or splitboard equipment, winter clothing, food, water, and navigation tools.
  • Unpatrolled area: There is no regular ski patrol or lift-assisted rescue service.
  • Emergency planning: Inform someone of your planned route and expected return time. Cell service may be unreliable.
