Getting There

Directions

For the Hankin access area, travel north from Smithers on Highway 16 for approximately 24 km. Turn left onto Kitseguecla Loop Road, then turn left across the railway tracks onto Kitseguecla Lake Road. Continue past the driveway just beyond the 8 km marker and turn left onto the 608 Forest Service Road. Follow the Hankin-Evelyn signs to the designated parking lot. From there, use the official trail map to locate Run F.

Important: If Run F is located on the Evelyn side rather than Hankin, it has a separate access route via Owens Road, Pope Road, Rope Road, and Rauter Road.

Parking

For the Hankin side, parking is available at the designated winter parking lot at the end of the 608 Forest Service Road. The access road is maintained during winter, but snow and icy conditions can make driving challenging. Four-wheel-drive vehicles equipped with winter tires and chains are recommended. The upper section is narrow and one-lane, with descending traffic having the right of way. Trailers are not permitted.

Safety & Preparation

  • Backcountry terrain: The area is ungroomed and does not have chairlift access or regular ski patrol services.
  • Avalanche awareness: Check the current Avalanche Canada forecast before entering the backcountry.
  • Safety equipment: Carry an avalanche transceiver, probe, and shovel, and know how to use them when travelling in avalanche terrain.
  • Changing snow conditions: Be prepared for deep powder, icy sections, variable snowpack, and changing visibility.
  • Tree hazards: Watch for tree wells, hidden branches, stumps, and rocks beneath the snow.
  • Travel with a partner: Avoid skiing alone and establish an emergency communication plan.
  • Weather preparedness: Bring appropriate winter clothing, food, water, navigation equipment, and emergency supplies.
  • Stay on designated routes: Follow marked ski runs and respect posted closures and backcountry boundaries.
  • Emergency preparedness: Cell service may be unreliable. Inform someone of your planned route and expected return time.
