Getting There

Directions

From Smithers, travel north on Highway 16 and take the exit onto Kitseguecla Loop Road. Follow the signs across the railway tracks onto Kitseguecla Lake Road. Continue for approximately 8 km, then turn left onto the signed Uptrack Forest Service Road (608 Road). Follow the Hankin-Evelyn signs to the designated parking lot. From there, access the marked uphill skin tracks and follow the official Hankin trail map to locate Run 2.

Parking

Parking is available at the designated Hankin-Evelyn Backcountry Recreation Area parking lot. The parking area provides access to the uphill tracks and backcountry ski network. The access road is maintained during winter, but snow and icy conditions can make driving difficult. Four-wheel-drive vehicles equipped with winter tires and chains are recommended. Trailers are not permitted on the narrow upper section of the Uptrack Forest Service Road.

Safety & Preparation

  • Advanced difficulty: Run 2 is considered an advanced ski run, best suited for experienced skiers with strong downhill skills.
  • Avalanche hazards: Check the current avalanche forecast before entering the backcountry. Carry an avalanche transceiver, probe, and shovel, and know how to use them.
  • Unpatrolled terrain: There is no regular ski patrol or lift-assisted emergency service. Visitors are responsible for their own safety.
  • Steep terrain: Be prepared for steep sections, deep powder, icy patches, and changing snow conditions.
  • Tree hazards: Watch for tree wells, hidden branches, stumps, and rocks beneath the snow.
  • Travel with a partner: Avoid skiing alone and establish an emergency communication plan.
  • Weather preparedness: Bring suitable winter clothing, food, water, navigation equipment, and emergency supplies.
  • Stay within designated terrain: Follow marked ski runs and respect posted closures and boundaries.
  • Emergency planning: Inform someone of your planned route and expected return time. Cell service may be unreliable.
