About This Trail

Mount McLean is a challenging backcountry hiking trail near Port Edward, British Columbia. The route climbs through forest toward open mountain terrain and provides expansive views over the Skeena Valley and surrounding coastal mountains.

Getting There

Directions

From the Prince Rupert/Port Edward area, follow the highway toward the Mount McLean trail access. The trailhead is located across the highway and railway tracks from a roadside rest area. Use current mapping and exercise caution when crossing the access area.

Parking

Parking is available at the roadside rest area near the trailhead. Park safely and do not obstruct the highway, railway access, or other vehicles.

Safety & Preparation

  • Expect steep, rocky, muddy, and uneven terrain.
  • The trail can become overgrown or difficult to follow above the treeline.
  • Faded flagging may be present in higher sections; carry reliable navigation equipment.
  • Snow and ice can occur on the upper mountain even when lower sections are clear.
  • Mountain goats and other wildlife may be encountered.
  • Be prepared for rapidly changing coastal mountain weather.
  • Cell service may be limited or unavailable.
  • Wear appropriate hiking footwear and carry sufficient water, food, navigation, and emergency equipment.
