About This Trail

Onion Mountain Trail is a backcountry hiking route in the Babine Mountains area near Smithers. The trail follows an old road/trail route through forest and open terrain toward Ganokwa Basin, with access into the surrounding mountain landscape.

Getting There

Directions

From Smithers, travel east along Highway 16 and turn onto Old Babine Lake Road. Continue to the established Onion Mountain trailhead and parking area, then follow the old road/trail toward Ganokwa Basin.

Parking

Parking is available at the established Onion Mountain trailhead near Old Babine Lake Road. Park in the designated area and keep the access road clear.

  • This is a remote backcountry route with limited facilities.
  • Expect uneven, rocky, and potentially steep terrain.
  • Be prepared for changing mountain weather and seasonal trail conditions.
  • Grizzly and black bears may be present; practice bear awareness.
  • Water from natural sources should be treated before drinking.
  • Motorized vehicles are not permitted on the trail during summer.
  • Carry sufficient water, navigation equipment, appropriate clothing, and emergency supplies.
  • Check current BC Parks conditions and advisories before travelling.
