About This Trail

Little Onion Mountain Trail (Astlais Mountain) is a backcountry mountain trail in the Babine Mountains area near Smithers. The route follows an old mining road through forest and open areas toward the Little Onion and provides access toward the Astlais Mountain area.

Getting There

Directions

From Smithers, travel east along Babine Lake Road and turn onto the access road toward the Onion Mountain trailhead. Follow the established route from the trailhead toward Little Onion Mountain, using the signed junctions and Trailforks map for navigation.

Parking

A large parking area is available at the Onion Mountain trailhead near Old Babine Lake Road. Park only in the established area and do not obstruct access roads.

Safety & Preparation

  • This is a remote backcountry route with limited facilities.
  • Expect steep, rocky, and uneven terrain, particularly higher on the route.
  • There is no reliable water source along the route; carry sufficient water.
  • Weather can change quickly in the alpine and exposed areas.
  • Watch for loose rock, slippery surfaces, and natural obstacles.
  • Be prepared for limited cell service and changing trail conditions.
  • Follow posted signs and respect seasonal access restrictions.
  • Carry appropriate navigation, clothing, food, water, and emergency equipment.
