Getting There

Directions

From Smithers, travel toward Babine Lake and follow Driftwood Road toward the Silver King Basin trailhead. Continue to the upper Silver King parking area at the end of the accessible road. Follow the established Silver King Basin route toward Joe L’Orsa Cabin, then continue toward Hyland Pass. Check current BC Parks information and road conditions before departure.

Parking

Parking is available at the Silver King trailhead area near the end of Driftwood Road. Space is limited, so park only in designated or established areas and keep the access road clear for other vehicles and resource traffic.

Safety & Preparation

  • Challenging backcountry route with remote and alpine terrain.
  • Expect steep sections, uneven ground, mud, loose rock, and potentially lingering snow.
  • Weather can change rapidly above the treeline.
  • Navigation becomes more important in open alpine terrain; carry an offline map, GPS, and backup navigation.
  • Bears, including grizzly bears, are present in the Babine Mountains. Practice bear safety and carry appropriate deterrent.
  • Driftwood Road may have active resource traffic; use caution and give large vehicles plenty of space.
  • Cell service may be unavailable; carry emergency communication equipment for longer trips.
  • Check current trail, road, wildfire, and park conditions before setting out.
