About This Trail

Exstew Falls is a spectacular multi-tiered waterfall surrounded by lush coastal forest near the Exstew River, west of Terrace. A short forest trail leads from the end of the access road toward the falls, with viewpoints of the lower and upper sections. Expect heavy spray near the waterfall, especially during higher flows.

Getting There

Directions

From Terrace, travel west on Highway 16 toward Prince Rupert. Look for the Exstew forestry/logging road access near the Exstew River area and turn north across the railway tracks. Follow the forestry road toward the falls, keeping to the main route and following signs or trail markers toward the waterfall. The access road is rough and unmaintained, so a high-clearance vehicle is recommended.

Parking

Parking is available near the end of the access road at the falls trail access. Space is limited, so park only in safe pullouts or established areas and keep the road clear for other vehicles and forestry traffic.

Safety & Preparation

The access road can be rough, muddy and uneven, with potholes, standing water and potentially difficult sections after rain. Use a suitable high-clearance vehicle and carry emergency supplies and a spare tire. The waterfall area can be very wet and slippery due to spray, so use caution around rocks, steps and the pools. Stay on established paths and keep a safe distance from the falls and river. Cell service may be limited or unavailable, and the area is remote. Be wildlife aware, including for bears.
