About This Trail

Copper Flats is a rugged recreation area near Terrace, located around the Copper River and Skeena River corridor. The area includes a network of rough off-road trails and access to the river, with terrain ranging from rocky surfaces and mud to sandy and uneven sections. It is primarily suited to off-road vehicles and experienced outdoor users rather than a conventional hiking trail.

Getting There

Directions

From Terrace, travel west along Highway 16 toward the Copper River Bridge. Copper Flats is located around the east and west sides of the bridge area. Access conditions can vary, so follow current local access information and posted signs. 

Parking

Parking is limited and access restrictions may apply. Use established areas only and do not block roads, gates, barriers, or access routes. Kitselas First Nation has installed barriers in parts of Copper Flats to discourage unauthorized vehicle access and illegal dumping. 

Safety & Preparation

  • Copper Flats is a flood-prone low-lying area beside the river.
  • Water levels can change quickly, so stay away from unstable riverbanks and avoid the area during flooding.
  • Expect deep mud, loose river rock, puddles, sand, and uneven terrain.
  • Some access sections are steep and can be difficult for vehicles with low clearance.
  • Respect Kitselas First Nation lands, posted restrictions, barriers, and access closures.
  • Do not dump garbage or leave vehicles, trailers, or other materials behind.
  • Watch for wildlife and keep food secured.
  • Conditions can change significantly after rain or high water.
