About This Trail

Mount Thornhill Trail is a challenging mountain hike near Terrace, British Columbia, leading through dense forest and numerous switchbacks before reaching open alpine terrain and the historic Thornhill Forest Fire Lookout. From the summit, hikers can enjoy expansive views across the Skeena Valley, Terrace, Lakelse Lake, and the surrounding mountain ranges. The trail follows an old route once used to access the forestry lookout.

Getting There

Directions

From the junction of Highway 16 and Highway 37, travel east on Highway 16 and turn south onto Old Lakelse Lake Road. Continue toward the Thornhill Landfill, then turn onto Copper Mountain Road. Follow the rough gravel road uphill until you reach a footbridge on the right, which marks the trailhead.

Parking

A small pull-out parking area is available near the footbridge at the trailhead. Parking is limited, so park carefully without obstructing the access road. The gravel approach road is rough, and a vehicle with good ground clearance is recommended.

Safety & Preparation

  • The trail is moderately difficult to challenging, with sustained uphill sections and numerous switchbacks.
  • The access road is rough and may contain potholes, washouts, large rocks, and narrow sections.
  • Use a high-clearance vehicle when driving the access road and exercise caution.
  • Trail conditions can become muddy and slippery, especially after rainfall.
  • Weather can change quickly near the alpine and summit.
  • The lookout shelter is intended for day use and emergencies only; pack out everything you bring in.
  • Bears and other wildlife may be present. Carry bear-safety equipment and keep food securely stored.
  • Bring sufficient water, food, navigation equipment, and emergency supplies.
  • Be cautious around rocky and exposed sections near the summit.
