About This Trail

Hai Lake to Herman Lake is a scenic hiking route through Hai Lake–Mount Herman Park, south of Terrace, British Columbia. The trail connects the two lakes through a forested landscape of old-growth trees, wetlands, and varied terrain. Both lakes offer peaceful views and opportunities for swimming, canoeing, and fishing. The route is generally considered moderate, although sections between the lakes can be overgrown and less clearly maintained.

Getting There

Directions

From Terrace, travel southwest along Queensway Drive and take Beam Station Road south past the Terrace Airport. For the Hai Lake access, turn onto South Thunderbird Forest Service Road and follow it to the turnaround and parking area. The Hai Lake trail begins beside the turnaround.

Parking

Parking is available at the turnaround area near the Hai Lake trailhead. South Thunderbird Forest Service Road can be rough and is not suitable for two-wheel-drive vehicles in some sections.

Safety & Preparation

  • Some sections between Hai Lake and Herman Lake can be overgrown and difficult to follow. Recent trail users have reported muddy, icy, and obstructed conditions.
  • Stay on designated trails and avoid creating shortcuts through the forest.
  • The forest service road can be rough, especially after wet weather.
  • Bears and other wildlife may be present; secure food and practice proper wildlife safety.
  • There are no lifeguards at either lake.
  • Be cautious around the lakeshore, wetlands, creeks, and slippery boardwalk sections.
  • Bring offline navigation, especially if continuing from Hai Lake toward Herman Lake.
  • Dogs should be kept under control; BC Parks notes that backcountry areas may present wildlife and bear-related risks for pets.
