About This Trail

Clearwater Lakes is an easy forest trail beginning at Onion Lake and passing through an old-growth reserve that includes Big Clearwater Lake and Little Clearwater Lake. The route features lush coastal forest, moss, ferns, roots, and rocky sections, with boardwalks and bridges crossing wetter areas. A side trail leads to a viewpoint overlooking Lakelse Lake and the surrounding valley.

Leave No Trace

Please follow Leave No Trace principles: pack out all waste, stay on designated trails, respect wildlife, and be considerate of other visitors.

Getting There

Directions

From Kitimat, travel north on Highway 37 toward Terrace. The trailhead is approximately 31 km north of Kitimat, beside Onion Lake. Look for the signed Clearwater Lakes Trail access and the small day-use area near Onion Lake.

Parking

Parking is available at the small day-use area at Onion Lake near the trailhead. Additional informal parking may be available nearby, but avoid blocking Highway 37 access or Forest Service roads.

Safety & Preparation

  • Some sections are wet and can become muddy, especially around boardwalks, streams, and low-lying areas.
  • Roots, rocks, and mossy surfaces can be slippery.
  • Be prepared for changing weather and variable trail conditions.
  • Bears and other wildlife may be encountered; carry bear spray where appropriate and make noise in dense vegetation.
  • If using the side trail to the viewpoint, take extra care near exposed or uneven areas.
  • Cell service may be limited; carry navigation and basic emergency supplies.
  • If visiting in winter, expect snow and icy conditions and use appropriate tires and equipment.
