About This Trail

Onion Lake Ski Trails (Doggy Loop) is a dedicated dog-friendly cross-country skiing route within the Onion Lake trail network. The loop passes through peaceful forest and the scenic coastal mountain landscape between Kitimat and Terrace. Dogs are permitted on this designated trail, making it a popular option for skiers who want to enjoy the trails with their canine companions.

Getting There

Directions

From Kitimat, travel north on Highway 37 toward Terrace. The Onion Lake Ski Trails are located about halfway between Kitimat and Terrace, where the Wedeene Forest Service Road meets Highway 37. Follow the signed entrance to the ski trail facility and stadium. The Doggy Loop begins from the main trail network.

Parking

Parking is available at Onion Lake Cross Country Ski Trails near the main stadium and trailhead. Parking is cleared when conditions and volunteer availability allow, so winter visitors should check conditions before travelling. 

Safety & Preparation

  • Dogs are permitted only on the designated Doggy Trail; do not take dogs onto the main ski trails.
  • This is primarily a cross-country ski area. Follow posted signs and trail-use rules.
  • Winter weather can change quickly, so check current trail and weather conditions before your trip.
  • Ski with a companion and let someone know your planned route.
  • Watch for grooming equipment and other trail users.
  • Wildlife, including bears, may be present in the surrounding forest.
  • Keep dogs under control and clean up after them.
  • Ski at your own risk; trail conditions and grooming can change with weather.
