About This Trail

Onion Lake Ski Trails (East Loop) is a scenic multi-use route through the forested landscape around Onion Lake. The trail travels through peaceful coastal forest and forms part of the larger Onion Lake cross-country ski trail network operated by the Snow Valley Nordic Ski Club. It provides a quiet setting for hiking and, during the winter season, cross-country skiing.

Getting There

Directions

From Kitimat, travel north on Highway 37 toward the Onion Lake area. Follow the access road to the Onion Lake Ski Trails Stadium Recreation Site, where the trail network begins. Follow the signs and trail markers for the East Loop.

Parking

Parking is available at the Onion Lake Ski Trails facility near the trail network entrance. Onion Lake Cross Country Ski Trails Park in the designated area and avoid blocking access roads or other trail users.

Safety & Preparation

  • Trail conditions can vary considerably between seasons.
  • During winter, be prepared for snow, ice, and changing weather conditions.
  • The trail network is primarily maintained for cross-country skiing, so hikers should yield to skiers and follow posted trail-use rules.
  • Dogs are not permitted on the main ski trails; the designated Doggy Trails are available for visitors with dogs.
  • Expect wet, muddy, or slippery conditions during warmer months.
  • Be aware of wildlife, including bears, in the surrounding forest.
  • Bring appropriate footwear, clothing, water, and navigation equipment.
  • Check current trail conditions with the Snow Valley Nordic Ski Club before visiting.
