About This Trail

Mount Elizabeth Trail is a challenging mountain route that climbs through mature coastal forest into sub-alpine terrain. The trail reaches a scenic lookout with sweeping views over Kitimat and the Douglas Channel. From the lookout, experienced hikers can continue toward Little Elizabeth and eventually the Mount Elizabeth summit. The upper sections become increasingly steep and technical, with loose rock, exposed terrain, and possible snow patches

Getting There

Directions

From the Kitimat Chamber of Commerce, travel north on Highway 37 for approximately 7.5 km. Turn right just south of where the BC Hydro transmission lines cross the highway and follow the North Hirsch Mainline for approximately 13.5 km. Turn left onto the rough, narrow 4WD access road and continue approximately 2.5 km to the trailhead. 

Parking

Parking is available at the trailhead near the trail kiosk. However, the final access road is rough, narrow, steep, and not suitable for all vehicles. Vehicles without sufficient ground clearance should park at the access point and walk the remaining road section. 

Safety & Preparation

  • This is an advanced/challenging trail recommended only for experienced hikers.
  • The upper sections contain loose rock, steep terrain, and exposed areas.
  • Snow may remain on the route in late spring/early summer and can return in autumn.
  • The route is best attempted in dry, stable weather conditions.
  • Use extreme caution beyond Little Elizabeth, where the terrain becomes more technical and exposed.
  • Forest-service roads may have industrial traffic; drive cautiously and give work vehicles the right of way.
  • Be prepared for bears and other wildlife.
  • Cell service may be limited or unavailable.
  • Carry sufficient water, food, navigation equipment, first-aid supplies, and emergency gear.
  • Check current weather, road, and trail conditions before starting.
