About This Trail

Fire Mountain is a moderate hike through coastal forest leading to a scenic viewpoint overlooking the Kitimat Valley, Douglas Channel, and surrounding mountains. The route passes through lush Sitka spruce forest and finishes with a short scramble near the summit. The viewpoint makes the climb worthwhile, particularly on clear days when the surrounding coastal landscape is visible.

Getting There

Directions

From Kitimat, travel north on Highway 37 toward the Cablecar area. The Fire Mountain trail is located east of the Cablecar subdivision. Follow the local access route toward the Fire Mountain area and use current trail signage or GPS to locate the trail access.

Parking

Parking is available near the trail access, with hikers commonly using the available roadside or established pullout areas. Do not park at or obstruct the Fire Mountain Shooting Range access. The shooting range has its own access road and parking area. 

Safety & Preparation

  • The trail is rated moderate and includes uphill sections and a short scramble near the top.
  • Expect muddy and slippery conditions after rain.
  • Wear sturdy hiking footwear with good traction.
  • Use extra caution during the final scramble and around exposed areas.
  • Be aware of black bears and other wildlife in the surrounding forest.
  • Bring water, rain protection, navigation equipment, and basic emergency supplies.
  • Cell service may be unreliable.
  • The nearby Fire Mountain Shooting Range is an active facility. Stay away from the range and obey all posted signs and closures.
  • Weather can change quickly, and visibility at the viewpoint may be reduced in fog or heavy rain.
