About This Trail

Giant Spruce Park is a peaceful forested park on the Kitimat River floodplain, featuring the remains of a massive old-growth Sitka spruce. The tree was previously recognized as the largest living Sitka spruce in British Columbia and was estimated to be more than 400 years old. Today, visitors can walk through the lush forest surrounding the tree site, where moss, ferns, and blueberry bushes cover the forest floor. A picnic table and interpretive information provide a place to pause and learn about the remarkable tree.

Getting There

Directions

From Highway 37, turn onto Haisla Boulevard and continue to the third traffic light. Turn onto Kuldo Boulevard, then turn onto Columbia Street. Continue toward the end of the road and follow the signs for Giant Spruce Park.

Parking

Parking is available near the park and trail access. Use the designated or established parking areas and avoid blocking nearby roads or access routes.

Safety & Preparation

  • Stay on the designated trail and avoid damaging the surrounding vegetation.
  • The area can be wet and muddy, especially after rainfall.
  • Watch for exposed roots, slippery ground, and fallen branches.
  • Be alert for wildlife, including bears, in the surrounding forest.
  • Do not climb on or damage the remains of the giant spruce.
  • Bring rain protection and footwear suitable for wet forest conditions.
  • Keep the area clean and pack out any garbage.
  • Follow all posted park signs and local regulations.
