About This Trail

Wathl Lake Trail is a forested backcountry route in the Wathl Creek area near Kitimat. The trail travels through coastal forest and wetland terrain toward the lake, with a mix of rocky ground, streams, and potentially muddy sections. The Wathl area is accessed through forest-service roads and is part of a larger network of recreational trails around Robinson Lake and Robinson Ridge.

Getting There

Directions

From Kitimat, travel east along Forest Avenue and continue onto the South Hirsch forestry road. Turn onto Wathl Main Road, marked by a Wathl Main sign in the trees. Continue along the forest-service road to the appropriate Wathl Lake trail access. Forest-service roads can have active industrial traffic, so drive slowly and give other road users plenty of room.

Parking

Parking is generally informal along the forest-service road near the trail access. Use established pullouts where available and do not block the road, gates, or industrial access routes. Parking conditions may vary depending on forestry activity and road conditions.

Safety & Preparation

  • Forest-service roads can be rough, narrow, muddy, and busy with industrial traffic.
  • Expect wet and slippery terrain, particularly after heavy rain.
  • Streams and wetland sections may require careful footing.
  • Bears and other wildlife may be present at any time; carry appropriate bear-safety equipment and never approach or feed wildlife.
  • Bring a map, compass/GPS, food, water, and emergency equipment.
  • Weather can change quickly in the Kitimat backcountry.
  • Cell service may be limited or unavailable.
  • Tell someone your route and expected return time before leaving.
  • Stay on established trails and avoid travelling alone when possible.
