About This Trail

North Cove and Mid Cove Trail is a scenic coastal hike near Kitimat that gradually descends through a mix of old cutblock and mature old-growth forest toward the shoreline. The trail first reaches North Cove, a sheltered coastal bay with picnic tables and an outhouse, before continuing south on a rougher section toward Mid Cove. The shoreline offers beautiful views of the surrounding forest and coastal landscape, with opportunities for birdwatching and wildlife viewing.

The route is approximately 2 miles (3.2 km) out and back, with about 590 ft (180 m) of elevation gain, and typically takes around 1 hour 12 minutes. It is generally rated moderate.

Getting There

Directions

From Kitimat, follow local roads toward the North Cove trail access. The trailhead is located outside the main developed areas of Kitimat and leads downhill from the access point toward the coast. Because access roads can change with conditions and forestry activity, check current mapping and road conditions before driving to the trailhead.

Parking

A free parking area/pullout is available near the trailhead, with recent hikers describing it as a medium-sized lot. Parking is generally considered easy, but space may be limited during busy periods.

Safety & Preparation

  • The trail is downhill on the way to the coves and uphill on the return, so allow extra energy for the climb back.
  • The section continuing from North Cove toward Mid Cove is rougher and less developed than the initial trail.
  • Expect mud, slippery sections, roots, fallen trees, and uneven ground, particularly after rainfall. Recent reports have mentioned muddy and slippery conditions.
  • If exploring the shoreline, check the tide times first. Low tide can provide more opportunities to explore the coastal area, while high water may restrict shoreline access.
  • Bear awareness is important. Hikers have reported seeing both black bears and grizzlies in the area. Carry appropriate bear-safety equipment and make noise where visibility is limited.
  • Bring insect protection, especially during warmer months.
  • Cell service may be unreliable in remote sections, so carry navigation and emergency supplies.
  • Stay on established routes and avoid attempting rough shoreline sections unless conditions are suitable.
