About This Trail

Emsley Cove Trail is a short, scenic route leading into the remote Emsley Cove area on the west side of Kitimat Arm. The trail provides an opportunity to experience coastal rainforest, rugged terrain, and views toward the cove and surrounding mountains. The area has a quiet, backcountry character and is known for its natural shoreline and marine setting.

Getting There

Directions

From Kitimat, travel south toward the Emsley Cove area using the local forest service road network. Access is via the Bish Forest Service Road (FSR) and connecting access routes toward Emsley Cove. Road conditions can be rough and access may vary depending on forestry activity, weather, gates, and seasonal conditions. Historical planning documents identify access to Emsley Cove from the Bish FSR and an ATV trail.

Parking

Parking is informal/backcountry-style rather than a developed trailhead parking lot. Look for a safe, established pullout near the trail access and avoid blocking forestry roads or access routes. There may be limited parking, so plan accordingly.

Safety & Preparation

  • Check road and access conditions before travelling. Forest service roads may be rough, muddy, or affected by forestry operations.
  • Be prepared for wet, slippery, and uneven terrain, particularly after rain.
  • Stay alert for fallen trees, creek crossings, and unstable ground.
  • The Emsley Cove area is relatively remote, so cell service may be limited.
  • Bring sufficient water, food, navigation equipment, and emergency supplies.
  • Tides are important if exploring the shoreline. Some shoreline areas are accessible only at low tide.
  • Watch for wildlife and give animals plenty of space.
  • Because public recreational infrastructure in the area has historically been limited, verify current access permissions and conditions before setting out. Older official assessments noted that Emsley Cove did not have established official recreational trails or sites at that time.
