About This Trail

A short loop that winds through the unique volcanic landscape near Gitwinksihlkw. The trail travels across rugged lava flats, offering an up-close look at the unusual terrain and the vegetation that has gradually returned to the lava flows. It also connects with nearby trails in the Saasak’ Hill network, making it a great option for exploring the area on foot or by bike. The loop is relatively easy but includes uneven, rocky sections typical of the lava fields.

Getting There

Directions

From Terrace, travel north on Highway 113 (Nisg̱a’a Highway) toward Gitwinksihlkw. Continue into the community and follow local access roads toward the Saasak’ Hill trail network. The Lava Fields Loop is located near the River Viewpoint Trail and Dam Access Road, on the outskirts of Gitwinksihlkw.

Parking

Parking is available around the Saasak’ Hill and Gitwinksihlkw trail access areas. Use established parking areas or roadside pullouts where permitted, and avoid blocking access roads or driveways.

Safety & Preparation

  • Expect rough, uneven lava rock with sharp and loose sections.
  • Sturdy footwear is recommended for hiking.
  • Mountain bikers should watch for hikers and other trail users, particularly around intersections.
  • Stay on established routes to protect fragile vegetation growing among the lava.
  • Be cautious around uneven edges, loose rock, and natural gaps in the volcanic terrain.
  • Weather can change quickly, and wet conditions can make the rocks slippery.
  • Respect Nisg̱a’a Lands and the cultural and natural significance of the area.
  • Pack out all garbage and leave rocks, plants, and other natural features undisturbed.
