About This Trail

The Dedication Site Lava Fields are a significant cultural and historical landmark in the Nass Valley, commemorating the devastating volcanic eruption that occurred more than 250 years ago. The eruption claimed the lives of more than 2,000 people in the surrounding area and dramatically transformed the landscape, leaving behind the striking lava fields and a unique ecosystem that can still be seen today.

A memorial ceremony was held at this site in 1992, creating a place for remembrance and reflection. The Dedication Site serves as an important reminder of the power of nature and the lasting connection between the Nisg̱a’a people, their land, and their history.

Visitors are encouraged to take time to appreciate the unusual landscape while treating the area with respect. The site reflects the wisdom passed down by Nisg̱a’a elders and offers an opportunity to learn about the natural forces that have shaped the Nass Valley and its people.

Getting There

Directions

The Dedication Site Lava Fields are located within the Nass Valley on Nisg̱a’a Lands in northwestern British Columbia. From Terrace, travel north along Highway 113 (Nisg̱a’a Highway) toward the Nass Valley. Continue through the valley toward the Nisg̱a’a communities and follow local signs for the lava fields and Dedication Site.

Follow the signed access road toward the designated Dedication Site area. From the parking area, visitors can walk toward the memorial and surrounding lava-field landscape. Because road and access conditions can change seasonally, follow local signage and check current visitor information before travelling.

Parking

Parking is available near the Dedication Site, allowing visitors to access the memorial and surrounding lava-field area on foot. Parking facilities may be basic, and space can be limited depending on visitor numbers.

Park only in designated areas and avoid blocking access roads, gates, or routes used by local residents and emergency vehicles. Do not drive or park on the fragile lava formations or undeveloped areas.
