This well-maintained trail features a series of switchbacks that make the climb more manageable and enjoyable. As you make your way toward the lookout, the trail gradually gains elevation before opening up to spectacular views of the town and the distinctive lava fields stretching to the south.
This section is designated for uphill mountain biking only, so riders should be prepared to climb rather than descend this portion of the trail. Hikers are encouraged to be considerate and yield to uphill cyclists where appropriate. If you're biking to the lookout, use either of the two trails to the north for your descent, providing a more suitable downhill route while helping maintain the designated direction of travel.
