About This Trail

Upper Leaping Lizard is primarily a mountain bike trail, offering a rewarding combination of climbing, technical features, and flowing downhill riding. Riders will appreciate hikers yielding to bikes, particularly on uphill sections and at narrow points on the trail. The route begins with a steep climb, with the first 200 metres providing the biggest challenge before the gradient becomes more manageable.

The upper section features several technical challenges, including a step-down jump with signage indicating an easier alternative line. Riders can choose their preferred line depending on their experience and comfort level. As the trail continues downhill, it becomes more flow-oriented, with smooth turns, enjoyable sections of singletrack, and a handful of smaller features. Overall, Upper Leaping Lizard is a great choice for intermediate riders looking to improve their bike handling, confidence, and ability to navigate technical features.

Getting There

Directions

From Terrace, travel north along Highway 113 (Nisg̱a’a Highway) toward New Aiyansh and continue into the Nass Valley. Continue past New Aiyansh and toward Gitwinksihlkw, then follow the route toward Nass Road. The parking area for Hlgu Isgwit Hot Springs is located along Nass Road, with a short, generally level walk and maintained boardwalk leading from the roadside parking area to the hot springs.

Parking

Parking is available beside Nass Road near the entrance to Hlgu Isgwit Hot Springs. Space may be limited, so park responsibly and do not block the roadway or access for other visitors. Advance reservations are required, and visitors should contact the Nisg̱a’a Lisims Government before travelling to confirm current hours, fees, and access requirements.

Safety & Preparation

  • Respect Nisg̱a’a laws and cultural protocols. Hlgu Isgwit is a sacred and culturally significant place that has been used by the Nisg̱a’a for ceremonial, medicinal, and spiritual purposes for generations.
  • Reservations are required. Contact the Nisg̱a’a Lisims Government before visiting and confirm the current operating schedule.
  • The hot spring water is naturally hot. Enter carefully and check the water temperature before soaking.
  • The boardwalk and surrounding surfaces can become wet and slippery, especially during rainy weather.
  • Stay on designated paths and boardwalks and avoid disturbing the surrounding natural environment.
  • Bring appropriate clothing, drinking water, and other supplies, as services in the Nass Valley are limited.
  • Be prepared for changing weather and road conditions, particularly during winter.
  • Follow all posted site rules and leave the area clean.
  • Do not camp, start fires, or engage in activities prohibited by site regulations.
  • Visitors should treat the site with care and respect as they are guests on Nisg̱a’a Lands.
