This is a challenging hike with significant elevation gain and steep sections. The City of Prince Rupert describes it as generally more challenging, while other local sources rate it as moderate to difficult.
The trail becomes steep after the initially easier forest section, with switchbacks leading toward the upper slopes of Mount Oldfield.
Expect mud, wet roots, slippery surfaces, creek crossings, and occasional treefall, particularly after heavy rain.
Waterproof hiking boots with good traction are recommended.
Prince Rupert's weather can change quickly, and heavy rainfall can significantly affect trail conditions.
Bring sufficient water, rain gear, navigation equipment, and extra clothing.
Be aware of wildlife, including bears, wolves, bald eagles, and other coastal wildlife.
The upper trail provides excellent viewpoints, but use caution around steep or exposed areas.
The old Mount Oldfield trail continues beyond the maintained Tall Trees route; this section is not maintained and is not recommended for hiking.
The trail is not wheelchair accessible because of its very steep sections.
