Getting There

Directions

Butze Rapid Trailhead is located approximately 6 km from downtown Prince Rupert along Highway 16. Drive east on Highway 16 and follow the signed turnoff for Butze Rapids. The trailhead is reached via a short access road leading to the parking area. The BC highway signage identifies the Butze Rapids access approximately 400 m from the highway sign.

The trail is approximately 5 km long and forms a loop through coastal rainforest, wetlands, marsh, and shoreline, with a viewpoint overlooking the famous reversing tidal rapids.

Parking

There is a dedicated parking area at the trailhead, with an outhouse and waste receptacles available. Parking is generally convenient and the trailhead is well marked.

Park only in the designated area and avoid blocking the access road or other vehicles. The trail is provincially maintained.

Safety & Preparation

The trail is generally easy to moderate, but includes several hilly and uneven sections.

Expect mud, roots, rocks, and slippery surfaces, particularly following rain.

Sturdy footwear with good traction is recommended.

Check the tide tables if you want to see the reversing tidal rapids at their most dramatic.

Use extra caution near the shoreline, beach access points, and viewing areas.

Wolves are present in the area. The City recommends avoiding bringing dogs if wolves have recently been spotted.

Stay alert for wildlife and keep dogs under control.

Prince Rupert's weather can change quickly, so bring rain gear and appropriate outdoor clothing.

Pack out garbage and follow Leave No Trace principles.
