Getting There

Directions

The trail begins in the Mount Hays/Kiwanis Trail area of Prince Rupert. Follow local roads toward the Kiwanis Trail access and Mount Hays. GPS or an offline trail map is strongly recommended, as the route can be difficult to follow in places.

The route is approximately 5 miles (8 km) out and back, with about 2,142 ft (653 m) of elevation gain and an estimated hiking time of 3 hours 41 minutes. It is considered a hard/challenging hike.

Parking

Parking is available near the Kiwanis Trail access, but space may be limited. Mount Hays Park only in designated or appropriate areas and avoid blocking residential roads, driveways, or access routes.

Before starting, check local conditions, as heavy rain can affect access roads and trails around Mount Hays.

Safety & Preparation

This is a challenging hike with significant elevation gain and steep sections.

The trail can be very muddy, wet, slippery, and overgrown, particularly after rainfall.

Expect fallen logs, roots, marshy sections, and uneven terrain. Recent hikers have reported that some portions are difficult to follow.

Waterproof hiking boots are strongly recommended.

Carry a GPS/offline map because trail markings and junctions can be unclear.

The actual summit area has radio towers and restricted/inaccessible sections, so do not enter restricted areas.

Use extra caution on steep and slippery sections, especially when descending.

Bring rain gear, sufficient water, and extra clothing suitable for changing weather.

Be prepared for wildlife encounters and avoid approaching or feeding animals.
