About This Trail
Best Sunrise View in Northern BC
Last Saturday, Chrissy and I hit the Trail from the prairie on Hudson Bay Mountain before the first light touched the valley. We hiked up to the prairie, one of the most breathtaking sunrise viewpoints anywhere in northern BC.
Watching the sky open over Smithers with a hot coffee in hand… unreal.
Moments like this remind you why we live here.
After soaking it all in, we headed back down to the chairlift for breakfast with the mountain waking up around us. Pure Smithers magic.

The Best Sunrise View in Smithers
viewpoint
You start the climb in the dark, the cold crisp enough to bite but the air perfectly still. As you rise toward the alpine on Hudson Bay Mountain, the valley behind you slowly begins to glow. The lights of Smithers flicker like quiet constellations, scattered across the Bulkley Valley while everyone else is still asleep.
Then you turn east.
The Babine Mountains are only shadows at first… and then it happens.
A thin line of gold breaks the horizon. The peaks catch the first light, turning soft pink, then fiery orange. The entire sky opens up — wide, clean, endless. The snow beneath your feet glitters like crushed glass, and for a moment everything is silent except your breath.
Below you, Smithers is still wrapped in blue hour. Above you, the world is catching fire.
This is sunrise on Hudson Bay Mountain.
This is one of the best views in Northern BC.
This is why we get up early.
