About This Trail

This trail is well marked with orange ribbons, making it easy to follow as you make your way toward the summit. The climb is challenging, with plenty of uphill sections and areas requiring you to climb over trees, roots, and other natural obstacles. However, the effort is well worth it—the views from the top are spectacular! Be prepared for muddy conditions, especially during wetter times of the year.

Getting There

Directions

From downtown Prince Rupert, head toward the Mount Hays/Scott Road area and follow local roads toward the Wantage Road trail access. The trail network includes connections between Scott Road and Wantage Road, with the route eventually climbing toward the former WWII lookout site. GPS navigation is recommended because trail access points and connecting routes can be difficult to identify. 

Parking

Parking is limited near the trail access. Use designated or appropriate roadside parking without blocking Wantage Road, driveways, or access for other vehicles. There may not be a formal, maintained parking lot directly at the trailhead, so be prepared to walk a short distance to the start of the route.

Safety & Preparation

The route can be steep, rugged, and overgrown, particularly on the upper sections toward the former lookout.

Expect uneven terrain, roots, mud, and potentially slippery surfaces, especially after rainfall.

Bring appropriate hiking footwear, water, and navigation/GPS equipment.

Weather in the Prince Rupert area can change quickly, so check the forecast before setting out and carry rain gear.

Stay on established routes where possible and use extra caution around steep or uneven terrain.

Because the area is remote and sections may be poorly maintained, hiking with a companion is recommended.

Follow Leave No Trace principles and pack out all garbage. The City of Prince Rupert also recommends being prepared for wildlife encounters on local trails.
