Crater Lake is one of Smithers’ most popular winter snowshoe routes, located on the flanks of Hudson Bay Mountain. The trail follows the same summer route toward the lake but becomes a beautiful winter track once the snow sets in. Locals and visitors love it because it’s easy to access, well-travelled, and leads to one of the most scenic alpine bowls in the Bulkley Valley.
The route begins near the Hudson Bay Mountain ski area, often starting from the Upper Prairie Road or from the Ski Run / Tower access point, depending on snow conditions.
In winter, the signage may be partially covered, but the snowshoe track is almost always packed in by regular local use.
The trail climbs gradually through subalpine trees before opening onto a broad, snowy meadow with expansive views of Hudson Bay Mountain, Kathlyn Glacier, and the surrounding ridges.
The last section crosses the open bowl toward Crater Lake, which sits frozen under a thick winter snowpack. The area is known for quiet alpine stillness, soft rolling terrain, and excellent photography opportunities.
On clear days, you can see across the Bulkley Valley toward the Babine Range.
