About This Trail

Sluice Box Trail follows the original railway bed leading out of Stewart, gaining elevation along the historic route. After approximately 1 km (0.6 miles), the trail splits: the right leads to a viewpoint overlooking the town of Stewart and the Bear River valley, while the left continues towards Stewart Transfer Station, to a waterfall above the gulch.

Getting There

Directions

Leaving Stewart on Highway 37A, the trailhead is off Stewart Transfer Station Road.

Parking

Parking is available at the pen for stock piping, opposite the trailhead near the Stewart Transfer Station turnoff. The bridge that leads to the historic trail and signage for the area is a small parking area.

Safety & Preparation

General regional bear safety applies: hike in a group, make loud noise, carry bear spray, avoid surprising bears, keep dogs leashed.

The route follows an old railway bed and gulch terrain — watch footing near the waterfall/gulch section.

No cell service should be assumed on the trail; let someone know your plans before heading out.
