About This Trail

The Bulkley-Nechako River Paddle offers a relaxing journey through the scenic landscapes surrounding the historic Aldermere townsite, located on the unceded territories of the Wet’suwet’en Nation. This peaceful paddling route follows calm stretches of the river, providing an excellent opportunity to experience the region's natural beauty while enjoying a leisurely day on the water.

Launching from Coalmine Road, paddlers can enjoy an easy and enjoyable trip through tranquil waters bordered by forests, open meadows, and diverse wildlife habitat. The route is ideal for canoeing, kayaking, or paddleboarding, with plenty of opportunities to spot seasonal wildflowers, waterfowl, and other native wildlife along the riverbanks.

After your paddle, consider extending your adventure with a visit to Tyhee Provincial Park, where you can relax along the shores of beautiful Tyhee Lake, enjoy a picnic, or explore additional recreational opportunities in the area.

Suitable for paddlers of most skill levels, the Bulkley-Nechako River Paddle is a wonderful way to connect with nature, appreciate the cultural significance of the landscape, and experience the peaceful beauty of the Bulkley Valley. As with any river outing, always check current water conditions, wear a properly fitted personal flotation device (PFD), and practice safe paddling techniques before setting out.

Getting There

Directions

The put-in is accessed from Coalmine Road near Smithers/Telkwa. From Smithers, head east on Highway 16 toward Telkwa. Turn onto Coalmine Road and follow it to the river access point. For the take-out, Tyhee Provincial Park in Telkwa provides convenient river access with a boat launch — from Highway 16 in Telkwa, follow signs to Tyhee Lake Provincial Park. A vehicle shuttle between put-in and take-out is required for this point-to-point route. The Bulkley Valley Kayak and Canoe Club (paddlebv.com) is a useful local resource for current river conditions and access information.

Parking

Parking is available at the Coalmine Road put-in area (informal, free). At the Tyhee Provincial Park take-out end, there is a formal day-use parking area with facilities including picnic tables, change rooms, flush toilets, and a concrete boat launch. Tyhee Park day-use fees may apply in season. If shuttling vehicles, confirm both access points before launching.

Safety & Preparation

Always wear a properly fitted PFD (life jacket) — it is required by law in BC for all paddlers. The Bulkley River is a cold, fast-moving glacially fed river; cold water shock is a serious risk if you capsize. Water levels and current speed vary significantly by season — spring snowmelt creates the highest and fastest flows, which are not suitable for beginner paddlers. Scout any riffles or rapids before running them, and be prepared to portage if conditions exceed your skill level. Strainers (submerged or partially submerged logs and debris) are a common hazard on river bends — stay alert and maintain control of your craft at all times. Grizzly and black bears are active along the riverbanks, particularly during salmon runs in late summer and fall. Cell service is unreliable along much of the route — inform someone of your float plan and expected take-out time. Motorized boats (jet boats) are occasionally used on the Bulkley by guides and fishers — be aware of river traffic.
