About This Trail

Meadows to Maxan Lake is an epic full-day ATV adventure in the mountains south and west of Houston, BC, covering 134 km of backcountry forestry roads and ATV trails through some of the most remote and spectacular terrain in the Bulkley Valley region. The route travels across a broad landscape of subalpine meadows, forested ridges, and valley bottoms, passing through varied terrain between 631 m and 1,225 m elevation. The name captures the journey from the high mountain meadow systems near the start down through the drainage systems toward Maxan Lake in the western end of the route. Total elevation gain over the full day is 1,815 m, with the descent to Maxan Lake dropping 2,343 m cumulatively — reflecting the rolling nature of the terrain. This is a committed all-day ride requiring fuel planning, a reliable machine, and a group. Recorded as a 7-hour trip. The scenery along the way is outstanding, with wide open meadow sections, panoramic ridge views, and wildlife habitat that is excellent for moose and bear sightings.

Safety & Preparation

Fuel critical: At 134 km this route exceeds the range of most ATVs on a single tank — carry extra fuel or pre-position fuel caches

Full day commitment: Do not start this route after 8:00 AM; getting caught in the backcountry after dark is a serious risk

Shuttle required: This is a point-to-point route — arrange shuttle logistics before heading out

No cell service for the entire route — a satellite communicator (SPOT, Garmin inReach) is mandatory

Active logging roads on portions of the route — yield to loaded log trucks at all times

High grizzly and black bear activity throughout — carry bear spray and ride in groups

Weather can change rapidly in the subalpine meadow sections — pack emergency gear, extra layers, and rain protection
