About This Trail

The Houston Snowmobile Dungate Trails is an extensive snowmobile trail network in the Dungate Meadows area, approximately 21km from Houston. Managed by the Houston Snowmobile Club since the 1970s, Dungate Meadows is the go-to family-friendly riding area near Houston — offering low-angle terrain, groomed trails, beautiful alpine meadows, and a notable shortage of heavy hill climbs. The groomed trail runs approximately 28km from the staging area to the Houston Snowmobile Club cabin, which is well-stocked with firewood by volunteers. From the cabin, riders can explore an endless system of meadows filled with deep powder, ride to Hanna and Poison Lakes for scenic ice fishing side trips, or take the lookout trail down to the Foxy Creek Road (a 42km loop). Dungate Meadows is the recommended area when visibility is low or avalanche hazards are high in the mountains — it is a low-risk ride. The terrain is predominantly alpine with spectacular scenery. Located on the unceded traditional territory of the Wet'suwet'en people.

Getting There

Directions

Two staging options are available. The main access: from Houston, drive east on Highway 16 approximately 10km and turn right onto McKilligan Road. Keep left onto Aitken Creek Road, continue past the landfill, and follow Equity Mine Road. The Dungate Meadows trail starts at the 2km mark on Equity Mine Road — you can park at 0km or far to the side of the road. Continue driving to approximately 21km from Houston for the main staging area parking lot. The alternative lower staging area is located 2km up Equity Mine Road.

Parking

Two staging areas serve the Dungate Meadows trails. The main parking lot is located approximately 21km from Houston on Equity Mine Road — it is plowed and is the larger lot, more suitable for trucks with trailers. A smaller staging area exists at the 2km mark on Equity Mine Road. Both are plowed by the Houston Snowmobile Club, and snow banks are pushed up by the club to assist with sled loading and unloading. No fees for Dungate Meadows (trail passes are only required for the Telkwa Range area). Park considerately to allow others to load and unload.

Safety & Preparation

Beware of hidden streams under the snow in the meadows — they can create deep ditches that catch riders off guard. Although trails are signed and brushed, they are not always groomed — check with the Houston Snowmobile Club for current grooming status. The cabin is maintained by club volunteers; leave it as you found it and respect the firewood supply. Always carry avalanche safety awareness even in lower-risk areas like Dungate. Weather conditions can change suddenly in Northern BC — carry emergency supplies, extra fuel, and a satellite communicator or two-way radio. Do not ride alone. The Houston Snowmobile Club offers Moonlight Rides twice a month at Dungate Meadows — contact the club through the BC Snowmobile Federation or the Houston Chamber of Commerce (250-845-7640) for information.
