About This Trail

A short, steep climb on an old mining road up to the Little Onion prominence south of the Big Onion/Astlais area. Expect sustained grade right out of the parking, switchbacks through an old burn, then open ridge views. There is no reliable water on the route. From the road near the Little Onion, step off to tag the small high point immediately west for the best view/break

Getting There

From downtown Smithers, head east on Highway 16. Just past the Bulkley River bridge, take the turn onto Old Babine Lake Road (also referred to in signage/maps) about 4 km east of Smithers. Continue along Old Babine Lake Road to a large parking lot: the lot is roughly 3.5 km from the junction of Old Babine Lake Road and newer Babine Lake Road. The trailhead begins at the base of an old mining road from that lot. From the parking lot follow the old mining road (sometimes called “Onion Mountain Trail / Little Onion Trail”) up into the forest. A high-clearance vehicle is recommended, as the road is old and rough in parts. Make sure you park in the designated lot before starting.

Safety & Preparation

Road and trail conditions can vary depending on the season and forestry activity. Be prepared for rough sections and bring essentials such as bear spray, proper footwear, and water. Check local trail updates before heading out, and always let someone know your route and expected return time.
