About This Trail

Broken Spokes is the highest-elevation trail on Mount Harry Davis and one of the most-ridden lines in the Houston mountain bike network. Rated blue but sitting at the top of the mountain — starting at 1,160 m (3,804 ft) — this 1.4 km singletrack descent earns its reputation through sustained pitch, natural terrain, and a character that rewards riders who commit. The name is a badge of honour in a network that doesn't take itself too seriously, and with a max gradient nudging 36% and 133 m of elevation loss packed into under 10 minutes of riding, it's easy to see how it got it. Broken Spokes is mountain bike only, DH-oriented, and the go-to upper-mountain run for locals looking for the longest, most satisfying descent the hill has to offer. With 48 logged rides and counting, it's the network's most active trail — and for good reason.

Getting There

Directions

From Houston, BC, head south on Butler Avenue and turn onto Harry Davis Way toward Mount Harry Davis. Follow the gravel forest service road all the way up to the uppermost access point of the trail network. Broken Spokes begins at the highest point on the mountain at approximately 1,160 m (3,804 ft) elevation — above Twisted Metal and the rest of the network. Shuttle access up the FSR is the practical approach. The trailhead is signed within the upper network; follow trail markers from the top of the road.

Parking

Park at the main Mount Harry Davis trailhead lot off Harry Davis Way. For Broken Spokes, a shuttle is the standard approach — the trail starts near the top of the FSR, well above the lower parking lot. Drop riders at the highest accessible point on the road, then park at the lower lot where the trail network terminates. Both lots are unpaved gravel with no current parking fees. Space is limited, especially on summer weekends — arrive early or coordinate your shuttle logistics in advance.

Safety & Preparation

Highest trail on the mountain. Broken Spokes starts above 1,160 m — weather and conditions at the top can differ significantly from what it looks like down in Houston. Be prepared for wind, cooler temperatures, and rapidly changing conditions.

Downhill primary — DH bike recommended. The sustained pitch and natural singletrack character suit a longer-travel bike with dependable brakes. This is not a cross-country trail.

Mountain bike only. No hiking or trail running — this trail is exclusively for mountain bikes.

Natural singletrack — no grooming. Surface conditions include loose rock, roots, and variable soil. Early season and post-rain conditions can make the steeper sections significantly more challenging.

Max grade of 36%. Several pitches demand strong brake modulation and confident body positioning. Know your limits before committing to the upper sections.

No lighting and limited cell coverage at elevation. Ride with a partner, carry a charged device or personal locator beacon, and let someone know your plans.

Wildlife: The upper mountain is active bear country. Make noise, especially on blind corners and through dense sections of trail.

Full protective gear strongly recommended. Full-face helmet, knee and shin pads, and elbow pads are appropriate given the trail's speed and gradient.

Indigenous territory: This trail sits on the traditional lands of the Wet'suwet'en Yintikh, Takla, and Dënéndeh peoples. Ride respectfully.
