About This Trail

The Hunter Basin Trail is a rugged and rewarding alpine hike located south of Telkwa, offering sweeping views of the Telkwa Range and the Bulkley Valley. The trail begins along an old mining road before climbing steadily through lush forest and into open alpine meadows dotted with wildflowers and streams. Once in the basin, you’ll find stunning views of surrounding peaks and the remnants of historic mining activity. Because the area is part of a caribou recovery zone, access is generally open from mid-July to late September, and dogs or motorized vehicles are not permitted. The route can be overgrown and faint in places, but it’s well worth the effort for those seeking solitude and dramatic mountain scenery.

Trip Planning Information

Getting There

Drive east on Highway 16 to Telkwa (about 15 km). Turn right onto Telkwa High Road, then left onto Coalmine Road. Follow Coalmine Road, which becomes Hunter Creek Forest Service Road (FSR). Continue for about 15 km, keeping right at the 14.8 km fork (left goes to Hankin Plateau). The trailhead is unmarked; look for a small pullout and a worn path starting uphill. A high-clearance 4×4 is recommended due to rough road conditions and missing bridge crossings.

Safety & Preparation

⚠️ Disclaimer: Trail conditions in the Hunter Basin area can change quickly due to weather, wildlife, and forestry activity. The road to the trailhead may require a high-clearance vehicle, especially after rain. Hikers should bring bear spray, extra layers, and enough water and snacks. Always check recent trail reports and let someone know your plans before heading out.
