About This Trail

Kager Lake Trail is an easy, flat 1.8-mile (2.8km) loop rated 4.6–4.7 stars — the heart of the Kager Lake Recreation Site and one of the most popular family trails in the Burns Lake area. Suitable for all ages, the trail circles picturesque Kager Lake through secondary pine and spruce forest where hikers can observe the area's native plant species. Picnic tables and fire pits are placed along the route, walk-in campsites (including one on a small island) dot the shoreline, and a dock invites a refreshing post-hike or post-ride swim — a beloved Burns Lake tradition after a day on the Boer Mountain bike trails. The trail can be walked in either direction and connects to the Long Lake loop (6.4km combined) and the full Boer Mountain network. Viewpoint side trails branch from the south end. Suitable for hiking, biking, birding, and snowshoeing. Open year-round. Located on the traditional territory of the Lake Babine Nation and Ts'il Kaz Koh.

Getting There

Directions

From Highway 16 in Burns Lake, take 5th Avenue north to Gowan Road. Continue on Gowan Road until you reach Boer Mountain Lookout Road and turn left. Follow the road past the Burns Lake Mountain Bike Park to the large gravel parking lot at Kager Lake — the trailhead is on the right and the lake is visible from the road. Approximately 10–15 minutes from Burns Lake.

Parking

Free parking at the large gravel lot, which accommodates large RVs and trailers. Free camping: 6 car-camping sites with tables and fire rings adjacent to the parking lot, 12 walk-in tent sites around the lake loop (one on a small island), three outhouses at the far end of the lot, and a small car-top boat launch for canoes. Picnic tables and fire pits along the trail. All services in Burns Lake.

Safety & Preparation

A very family-friendly trail, but it is shared with mountain bikers heading to and from the Boer Mountain network — keep children and dogs aware of riders. No lifeguards at the lake or dock — supervise swimmers. Bears and moose are present in the area — carry bear spray, keep dogs leashed, and store food securely if camping. Mosquitoes can be busy near the lake in early summer — bring repellent. Check trailforks.com for any current closures in the surrounding network.
