About This Trail

Morice Mountain Trail is a strenuous 4.8-mile (7.7km) out-and-back hike south of Houston, with significant elevation gain and taking approximately 4–5 hours to complete. The trail, sometimes called the Carrier-Alpine Trail, begins at the end of an old logging road within the Morice Land Resource Management Plan area and climbs through diverse forest zones into spectacular alpine terrain on Morice Mountain. From the upper reaches, sweeping views extend over the Morice River watershed, the Telkwa Range, and the vast wilderness of the BC interior. The mountain is at the centre of the broader Morice Mountain Nordic Ski area and Houston Community Forest at its base. A demanding but highly rewarding full-day adventure for experienced hikers. Dogs welcome. Located on the unceded traditional territory of the Wet'suwet'en people.

Leave No Trace

Getting There

Directions

From Houston, turn left (south) off Highway 16 onto Buck Flats Road. Follow Buck Flats Road for 8km to the main Morice Mountain Nordic area parking lot. Continue past the parking area following the main trail until you reach the lake, then turn right. Continue approximately 1km further to reach a large clearing on the right where you will find the Morice Mountain Trail beginning as an old logging road. Trail signs and maps on site should guide you. A downloaded GPX track is recommended.

Parking

Use the main large parking area at 8km on Buck Flats Road — free and open year-round. From the parking area, the trailhead requires a further 1–2km of hiking to reach. No formal facilities at the upper trailhead. All services available in Houston.

Safety & Preparation

This is a strenuous, full-day hike — only experienced hikers in good physical condition should attempt the full summit route. Start early and carry sufficient water, food, warm layers, and rain gear. A downloaded GPX track is essential for the upper section where the old logging road transitions to alpine terrain. Bears (black bear and grizzly) and moose are present in this area — carry bear spray and make noise throughout. The trail can be difficult in wet conditions; wear waterproof boots. In winter the lower sections are used for cross-country skiing — be aware of skiers on the Buck Flats Road and lower trails. Cell service is limited — inform someone of your complete plans before departing.
