About This Trail

Equity Mine Trail is an easy 1.5-mile (2.4km) out-and-back trail east of Houston leading to the historic Equity Silver Mine site, one of the largest silver-gold mines in BC's history. The mine operated from 1980 to 1994 and at its peak produced silver, gold, and copper from the high-grade ore body. Today the trail passes through the former mine area, now reclaimed by nature, with interesting remnants of the industrial past and a spectacular icefall that forms on the cliff face in winter — making this a popular winter snowshoe destination. In summer the first section of the trail follows some creek-side terrain that can be wet; waterproof footwear is recommended. The trailhead is on the eastern side of Equity Mine Road, with parking on the western side. Suitable for hiking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. Dogs welcome. Located on the unceded traditional territory of the Wet'suwet'en people.

Getting There

Directions

From Houston, drive east on Highway 16 approximately 10km. Turn right onto McKilligan Road, then keep left onto Aitken Creek Road past the landfill, continuing as the road becomes Heading Creek Road. Follow the main road, staying right at 6.5km and continuing to 12km, keeping left to cross the bridge. Continue on toward the Equity Mine area the trailhead is on the eastern side of Equity Mine Road, with the parking area on the western side. Use the downloaded GPX track to confirm access, as signage is limited.

Parking

Parking is on the western side of Equity Mine Road at the trailhead area. Free, no formal facilities. The access road is unpaved and requires care in wet conditions. All services in Houston.

Safety & Preparation

The creek-side sections in the first part of the trail can be very wet in spring and summer wear waterproof boots. In winter this trail is primarily used for snowshoeing to view the icefall; carry microspikes or snowshoes and be aware of conditions. The old mine site may have remnants of industrial equipment and disturbed ground stay on the marked trail and do not explore old mine structures. Bears are present in this area carry bear spray. Road access may be rough in wet conditions. Cell service is unreliable inform someone of your plans before heading out.
