About This Trail

Buck Creek Falls is an easy 0.5km out-and-back trail near Houston, leading to a beautiful waterfall on pristine Buck Creek. Short and accessible for all ages and fitness levels, the trail takes just 20–30 minutes and starts from a small forest service parking area on the north side of the creek. The falls are best experienced in early summer when winter snowmelt sends the creek surging at full power, but the site rewards visitors throughout the season. In summer, the pool at the base of the falls is a favourite local swimming and floating spot. Suitable for hiking, birding, and snowshoeing. Dogs welcome on leash. Located on the unceded traditional territory of the Wet'suwet'en people.

Leave No Trace

Please follow Leave No Trace principles: pack out all waste, stay on designated trails, respect wildlife, and be considerate of other visitors.

Trail Highlights

Buck Creek Falls

waterfall

Buck Falls is a series of three waterfalls on Buck Creek, with water levels that change dramatically over the course of the year — offering a very different sight in spring versus autumn. During low water, potholes can be seen forming near the base of the third falls, where sand, gravel, and cobbles get trapped and slowly erode the rock over time, with some holes even connecting to each other at their base.

Getting There

Directions

From the Houston Tourist Information Centre, head east on Highway 16 approximately 10km. Turn right onto McKilligan Road, then keep left onto Aitken Creek Road. Follow Aitken Creek Road past the landfill site and continue to the small forest service parking area on the north side of Buck Creek, approximately 14km from Houston. The trailhead begins from the parking area.

Parking

A small forest service parking area is located on the north side of Buck Creek off Aitken Creek Road. Free, no formal facilities on site. The access road passes the Houston landfill — continue past it to reach the parking area. All services available in Houston.

Safety & Preparation

Rocks along the trail and creek can be very slippery when wet — wear sturdy footwear with good grip and exercise caution near the water's edge at all times. Supervise children closely near the falls and the pool below. Water levels vary dramatically by season — the falls are at their most powerful and potentially dangerous during spring snowmelt (May–June) when the current is strongest. Do not wade or swim near the falls during high water. Bears are present in the Houston area — carry bear spray. The access road may be rough after rain.
