About This Trail

Lost Dog Burnt Turkey Loop is a moderate loop trail in the Barrett Hat / Vallee Lake Recreation Area west of Houston, combining two of the network's named trails through boreal forest and old forest fire terrain. The route takes hikers through the area's varied landscape including sections through old burnt trees and vibrant new growth with ups and downs leading to outstanding clifftop views of the surrounding area. Part of the highly popular MORS (Morice Outdoor Recreation Society) trail network, which receives over 1,500 visits per year and is one of the most well-maintained recreation areas near Houston. Suitable for hiking, mountain biking, skiing, and snowshoeing. Open year-round. Dogs welcome. Located on the unceded traditional territory of the Wet'suwet'en people.

Getting There

Directions

From the Houston Tourist Information building, drive west on Highway 16 for 14.5km. Turn left (south) onto Barrett Hat Road (not Barrett Station Road) and travel 1.4km to the junction with Parish Road. The trail network begins at the west side of this intersection. The trailhead can also be found on an old logging block in the area follow signs from the network entry point. Download the MORS trail map from houstonhikers.ca before visiting.

Parking

 Free parking at the Barrett Hat Road / Parish Road junction, 14.5km west of Houston. No formal toilets at the trailhead. Picnic tables and viewpoint benches are available within the network. 

Safety & Preparation

 The trail involves a steady climb from an old forest fire site wear sturdy footwear and be prepared for uneven terrain including loose rock. Bears are present in the Houston area carry bear spray and make noise. The trail is well-signed but a downloaded MORS trail map is recommended for navigating the broader network. Some sections may be wet or overgrown in early summer.
