Tyhee Lake via Tower Road is a scenic 4.7 km out-and-back trail that connects the Village of Telkwa with Tyhee Lake Provincial Park via Tower Road and the historic Aldermere Trail. With approximately 125 metres of elevation gain, the hike takes around 1 to 1.5 hours to complete and offers an easy, family-friendly adventure rich in both natural beauty and local history.
The route follows one of the original pioneer corridors linking the former Aldermere townsite to Tyhee Lake, where early settlers once harvested winter ice to stock their cold cellars. Today, the trail winds through beautiful second-growth aspen forest before reaching peaceful sections of the lakeshore, providing a relaxing setting for hikers of all ages.
Along the way, visitors can stop at an interpretive display highlighting the history of the Aldermere settlement, offering insight into the area's pioneering past. A viewing platform overlooking the lake's marsh and wetland is another highlight of the trail, providing an excellent vantage point for birdwatching. The wetlands, with their standing dead trees, bulrushes, and cattails, attract a wide variety of resident and migratory bird species throughout the year.
In early summer, the trail is especially beautiful as colourful wildflowers bloom along the forest floor and open meadows. Open year-round, this route is perfect for hiking, walking, wildlife observation, nature photography, and peaceful lakeside exploration.
Located on the unceded traditional territory of the Wet'suwet'en people, Tyhee Lake via Tower Road offers visitors an opportunity to experience the region's rich cultural heritage alongside its diverse natural landscapes. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash to help protect wildlife and ensure an enjoyable experience for all trail users.
