About This Trail

Skilokis Ridge is a hard 3.2-mile (5.1km) out-and-back trail on the northwest spine of Blunt Mountain near South Hazelton, with 2,063ft (629m) of elevation gain taking approximately 3–3.5 hours. The trail begins at around 1,200m elevation — accessible by driving the Skilokis FSR off the Suskwa FSR — then climbs to roughly 1,850m into spectacular open alpine terrain. The first 40 minutes is a steep forest grind through dense moss and trees, but the reward is outstanding: broad alpine ridges with panoramic views of the Hazelton Valley and beyond toward Moricetown and the Bulkley Valley. The ridge is a gateway to much more extensive alpine terrain suitable for overnight adventures and connects to the Mt. Blunt area. Wildflowers are abundant in summer and wildlife sightings are common. Low traffic — unlikely to encounter many others on the trail. Located on the unceded traditional territory of the Gitxsan people.

Getting There

Directions

Access is via the Skilokis Forest Service Road (FSR) off the Suskwa FSR, near South Hazelton. From New Hazelton, head south or east to connect with the Suskwa FSR, then turn onto the Skilokis FSR and drive to approximately 1,200m elevation where the trail begins. A high-clearance vehicle is recommended for the FSR access. For full detailed directions visit bvbackpackers.ca. Download the GPX track before departing as the FSR access roads are not formally signposted.

Parking

Informal parking area at the end of the drivable section of the Skilokis FSR at approximately 1,200m elevation. No formal facilities or fees. High-clearance vehicle required for the access road. The nearest services are in New Hazelton or South Hazelton.

Safety & Preparation

The lower section of this trail is a steep, relentless climb through dense forest with minimal views — be prepared to push through the initial grind before reaching the alpine. The trail can be hard to follow in the lower forest section; a downloaded GPX track is essential. The access FSR road requires a high-clearance vehicle and may be gated or impassable in wet conditions or early season. Once on the ridge, the terrain is open and exposed — carry warm layers and rain gear as weather can change rapidly. Bears (black bear and grizzly) and other wildlife are present in this area — carry bear spray and make noise throughout. Snow can persist on the upper ridge well into summer; check conditions before heading out. Cell service is non-existent — inform someone of your plans and expected return time.
