Getting There

Directions

From Smithers, drive west on Highway 16 toward Houston for approximately 20km. Watch for the signed Bulkley River Recreation Site turnoff on the south side of the highway. Follow the access road to the site. From Houston, drive east on Highway 16 approximately 30km to the same turnoff. The trail begins near the small chalet and map kiosk at the parking area.

Parking

Free parking at the Bulkley River Recreation Site near the chalet. Rustic camping with 11 sites is available (outhouses, fire rings, food caches, picnic tables). No fees for day use. Two canoe pull-outs are located along the river trail. Visit roundlakebc.com for more site information.

Safety & Preparation

The trail runs directly alongside the Bulkley River — stay well back from the banks, especially during spring snowmelt when water levels and currents are at their highest. Bears (black bear and grizzly) are common in cottonwood river corridors, particularly during salmon runs in August and September — carry bear spray, make noise, and keep dogs on leash. Trail sections may be muddy after rain. Limited cell service in this area — tell someone your plans before heading out. Store food properly if camping.
