Getting There

Directions

The Bulkley River Recreation Site is located approximately 30km from Houston and approximately 20km west of Smithers on Highway 16. From Smithers, drive west on Highway 16 toward Houston. Watch for the signed turnoff to the Bulkley River Recreation Site on the south side of the highway. Follow the access road to the recreation site. The trailhead and trail map kiosk are located near the chalet/parking area.

Parking

Free parking is available at the Bulkley River Recreation Site near the small chalet. The recreation site also has 11 rustic camping sites (ranging from single tent to small groups) with outhouses, fire rings, food caches, and picnic tables. No day-use fees. Two canoe pull-outs are also available along the river. For more information visit the Round Lake Community Association at roundlakebc.com.

Safety & Preparation

The trails run alongside the Bulkley River — keep children and dogs close to the bank and exercise caution during spring high water. Bears (black bear and grizzly) are active in the cottonwood river corridor, particularly during salmon runs in late summer and fall — carry bear spray, make noise, and keep dogs on leash. Some trail sections can be wet or muddy in spring and after rain. The recreation site is in a remote area with limited cell service — inform someone of your plans. If camping, use the provided food caches to store all food and scented items.
