About This Trail

Discover this rewarding 11.6 km out-and-back trail near Bulkley-Nechako A, British Columbia. Considered a challenging route, the trail takes an average of 5 hours and 45 minutes to complete, offering an excellent adventure for hikers and snowshoers seeking stunning scenery and a satisfying climb.


The trail winds through beautiful forests and gradually ascends into higher terrain, rewarding visitors with picturesque mountain landscapes and peaceful wilderness along the way. Popular for both hiking during the warmer months and snowshoeing in winter, it provides a memorable outdoor experience in every season.


Although well-loved by outdoor enthusiasts, the trail's length and natural setting allow for plenty of solitude, especially during quieter times of the day. Open year-round, it showcases a different kind of beauty with each season—from lush summer greenery and vibrant autumn colors to snow-covered winter landscapes.


Dogs are welcome and may be allowed off-leash in some areas, provided they remain under control and respect wildlife and other trail users. Getting There

Directions

From Smithers, drive north on Highway 16 for approximately 21km and turn left onto Kitseguecla Lake Road. Turn left again just after the railway tracks. Drive 8km along Kitseguecla Lake Road — just past the 8km signpost, pass a driveway on the left then turn left onto the 6008 Road (Uptrack Forest Service Road). Follow Hankin-Evelyn signs for approximately 6km to the Hankin Mountain parking area. The Evelyn Mountain Trail is accessed from the Hankin-Evelyn trail network. Total distance from Smithers is approximately 34km. 

Parking

Free parking at the Hankin Mountain trailhead parking area at the end of the access road. The road is plowed in winter by local sponsors. No formal facilities on site. All services available in Smithers, approximately 34km away.

Safety & Preparation

This is the most demanding trail in the Hankin-Evelyn system — only experienced, physically fit hikers should attempt it. Start early to allow sufficient time and avoid being caught on exposed terrain in afternoon weather. The trail has steep and very steep sections throughout — trekking poles and sturdy hiking boots with ankle support are strongly recommended. Carry a minimum of 2–3 litres of water, ample food, and extra warm layers as alpine temperatures can be significantly colder than in the valley. A downloaded GPX track or printed map from bvbackpackers.ca is essential as the trail can be hard to follow in places. You are entering avalanche-prone terrain — in winter and spring carry a transceiver, probe, and shovel, and check avalanche.ca before heading out. Bears (black bear and grizzly) are present in this area — carry bear spray, make noise, and keep dogs leashed. Cell service is non-existent — inform someone of your full plans and expected return time before departing.
