Getting There

Directions

From Highway 16, turn north onto Highway 37 at Kitwanga and cross the bridge spanning the Skeena River. Turn left off the highway and drive west on Cedarvale Road. After 1km there is a bridge; continue another 2.5km to where the road crosses the Kitwanga River. Once across, the road makes a sharp left turn before bearing right to climb up a hill. Near the top, take the side road to the right — this road is rough and requires a 4x4 vehicle or ATV. Follow this road for 2km to the parking and turnaround spot on the right. Do not drive beyond this point — the road narrows with no further turnaround spots. From the parking area, walk up the old road and ignore the overgrown side road to the left. After a marshy patch, the road ends and the trail begins.

Parking

A small informal parking and turnaround area is located 2km up the access road from Cedarvale Road. 4x4 or ATV required to reach this parking spot — lower-clearance vehicles should park on the roadside earlier and walk the additional distance (adds approximately 2km each way and around 200m extra elevation). No fees, no facilities on site. The nearest services are in Kitwanga or Hazelton.

Safety & Preparation

A 4x4 vehicle is required to reach the upper parking area — the access road has deep holes and rough sections that are impassable for standard vehicles, especially in wet conditions. The trail is extremely steep (30–40% average grade) — sturdy footwear, trekking poles, and a good fitness level are essential. Snow can persist near the summit well into late spring — waterproof boots and gaiters are recommended until at least late June. The descent is slippery, particularly when wet. Bugs (mosquitoes and blackflies) can be severe in summer — carry repellent. Kitwanga Mountain Provincial Park contains high-value grizzly bear habitat in the subalpine — carry bear spray, make noise throughout, and keep dogs on leash at all times. Horseback riding is not permitted on this trail. Allow more time than the distance suggests — this trail is harder than it looks.
