Getting There

Directions

From Highway 16 just before Telkwa (coming from Smithers), turn right onto Tyhee Lake Road then turn right onto Hislop Road. Follow Hislop Road to the top where it meets Van Horne Road — look for a trail sign on a tree approximately 100m from this junction. This is about 12km from Telkwa or approximately 20km from Smithers. A second access option from the upper side: follow the main access road from the top of Hislop Road (4WD recommended) to the Sawmill trailhead parking area, or continue to the Moose Trailhead pullout beyond the Hoof Hearted Acres driveway. For current road and trailhead access conditions, check tyeemountaintrails.wordpress.com or call the Tyee Mountain Trails Society at (250) 877-3495.

Parking

There are multiple parking areas within the Tyee Mountain Trails network. At the Hislop Road access, a parking lot is located at the top of Hislop Road at the first trailhead. From the upper access road (4WD only when conditions permit), parking pullouts are available near the Sawmill trailhead and at the Moose Trailhead further in. All parking is free. No formal facilities on site. Note that the upper access road from Hislop is seasonally closed in spring due to wet and muddy conditions — check tyeemountaintrails.wordpress.com for current road status before visiting.

Safety & Preparation

The Trapline East and West trails historically follow an active trapline — watch for trap signage along those routes and keep dogs on leash and under control at all times throughout the network. The upper access road requires 4WD and is seasonally gated in spring — do not attempt in a standard vehicle when soft. Trail conditions vary significantly by season: some sections (particularly around Beaver Swamp and the McDowell Lake perimeter) can be wet and soft in spring and early summer. In winter, fat bikes are welcome on groomed trails but avoid riding when snow is soft and ruts form — this damages the trail surface for other users. Bears (black bear and grizzly) and moose are active in this area — make noise, carry bear spray, and keep dogs leashed. For the most current trail conditions, grooming updates, and access information contact the Tyee Mountain Trails Society at (250) 877-3495 or visit tyeemountaintrails.wordpress.com.
